The holiday season can be fun, joyous, chaotic, and stressful all at the same time. Throughout the winter holidays, many of us are busy decorating our homes, shopping for presents, standing and cooking for hours, and running errands. According to Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine:

“75 percent of Canadians will experience foot health problems in varying degrees of severity at one time or another in their lives. About 19 percent of the Canadian population has an average of 1.4 foot problems each year.”

Prolonged standing increases the likelihood of blood accumulation in the foot. Other podiatry problems include flat feet, edema, bunions, and plantar fasciitis. During the holiday season, give your feet a little tender loving care. Foot injuries and soreness can slow you down and affect holiday plans. Protect the health of your feet by following these steps:

1. Avoid high heels - Stilettos and pumps might seem like great holiday accessories, but they can have unpleasant effects on your feet, including:

  • Sharp pain in heels, soles, and toes
  • Sore calves
  • Sprained ankles
  • Constricted blood vessels
  • Crooked feet
  • Hyperextension of the toes

 

2. Moisturize feet - Apply cream or lotion to feet after bathing. Cold, dry air encourages rough skin and cracking, which can be painful and uncomfortable.

3. Wear comfortable shoes - Comfortable shoes are an important way to protect foot mobility and health. When planning to shop or stand and cook for hours, wear comfortable shoes to avoid blisters, calluses, and potential injury. If you have orthotic insoles, be sure to wear them -- even in your slippers while at home -- to alleviate stress and pressure.

4. Foot care - After hours of holiday shopping and preparations, take some time to pamper your feet with a massage and/or acupuncture. Release tension in your tired foot muscles and joints.
