Is Acupuncture Safe for Kids?

Tips April 1, 2019

There is growing evidence that acupuncture is safe, has no adverse side effects, and has a number of amazing health benefits. While this traditional ancient Chinese medicine is great for adults, can it be safe and beneficial for kids?

A Harvard-affiliated children’s hospital study backs the belief that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for children with chronic pain conditions. The 243 participants (six to eighteen years of age) who received one year of acupuncture therapy reported less pain after the treatment. In 2016 the Medical Acupuncture Journal reported similar results. Parents also noticed significant improvements in their children’s mood, concentration, and social interactions.

When talking to children about acupuncture treatment, parents can explain that (unlike ones used for immunization or drawing blood), acupuncture needles are incredibly thin and flexible. Although an acupuncture patient may occasionally experience a slight sting, the feeling goes away quickly, and holistic relief begins.

More than a Pain Killer

While acupuncture does alleviate chronic pain, it simultaneously stimulates the release of endorphins (hormones that helps relieve tension and aches). Acupuncture is used worldwide to treat different health conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • ADHD
  • Nausea
  • Acid reflux
  • Stomach ache
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Asthma and respiratory allergies
  • Bed wetting
  • Drooling
  • Bone and joint pain

Is Acupuncture Safe for Kids

It’s natural for parents to have some questions when it comes to reducing their children’s pain or other issues with acupuncture. The practice is safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. Find a skilled practitioner who is good with children, knows how to gain their trust, and puts them at ease in a calming environment. It also helps kids to have their mom, dad, or caregiver by their side during the treatment.

Acupuncture, in the hands of an experienced practitioner, is customized to suit each child’s health needs and temperament. Diet, energy, immunity, sleep, and digestive health are taken into consideration to determine proper treatment. Acupuncture does not take the place of traditional medical approaches. For instance, if a patient has diabetes, they still require insulin to keep blood sugar under control.
